Gas Pipe Sizing Calculator

Calculate proper gas pipe sizes for natural gas and propane installations

⚠️ Important Safety Notice

Gas pipe sizing must comply with local building codes and be installed by licensed professionals. This calculator provides general guidance only. Always consult local codes, gas utility requirements, and a licensed professional for final sizing and installation. Improper gas piping can result in fire, explosion, or carbon monoxide poisoning.

How to Use This Calculator

Step 1: Add up the BTU rating of all gas appliances that will be connected:

  • Gas Furnace: 40,000-150,000 BTU
  • Water Heater: 30,000-50,000 BTU
  • Gas Range: 15,000-65,000 BTU
  • Gas Dryer: 20,000-25,000 BTU
  • Fireplace: 30,000-40,000 BTU

Step 2: Measure the longest pipe run from the gas meter (or propane tank) to the farthest appliance.

Step 3: Count the number of fittings (elbows, tees, valves). Add 5 feet of equivalent length for each fitting.

Important: Natural gas tables based on 0.5 PSI pressure drop. Propane tables based on 11" water column (0.4 PSI) inlet pressure.

Gas Pipe Capacity Reference

These capacities are based on standard conditions. Natural gas capacity is shown for Schedule 40 black iron pipe with 0.5 PSI pressure drop. Propane has different capacities due to higher pressure.

Always verify with local codes and gas utility requirements.
